Regional Overview
The Western region of the United States comprises two states – California and Hawaii. Located on the west coast of the United States along the Pacific Ocean, California is bordered on the north by Oregon, on the east by Nevada, on the southeast by Arizona and on the south by the Mexican state of Baja California. California, the most populated US state, is home to more than 36.5 million, and with an area of 163,696 square miles, it is the third largest state. The archipelago of Hawaii encompasses more than a hundred islands spread over 1,500 miles in the northern Pacific Ocean and is populated by over 1.2 million.
The Western region’s higher education system includes 435 universities and colleges that enroll more than 2.2 million undergraduate students annually in the fall. Of these institutes, 157 are public and 278 are private; 244 are four year institutes and 191 are two year colleges. Over 400 of the Western region’s universities and colleges are located in California, which has by far the highest number of postsecondary institutions in the United States. Both California and Hawaii have unique education systems. California’s public system of higher education is three-tiered, while Hawaii is the only state with a single, unified school system. The Western region’s higher educational institutions also include a wide breadth of notable career and technical schools, community colleges and religious institutes.
